“SMILE” what does it really mean?
[ S M I L E ] a simple word with a wealth of benefits
Why is it important to have healthy teeth?
The obvious answer is that we use our teeth for cutting and chewing. It is the first step in digestion to give us the energy we need for sustenance and basic life.
An equally important need for a healthy mouth and teeth, that often isn’t fully recognized, is to create a healthy genuine smile. Not just by common sense, but research has shown that there are a number of health benefits directly contributed to smiling; both physically and psychologically. Chemicals called endorphins are released in the brain when we smile. These are chemicals directly related to making us feel happy and reducing stress. Even faking a smile works! as the brain interprets the actual physical smile, and not the motivation behind it. Endorphins are also your body’s natural pain killer which can help people with chronic pain issues by naturally reducing their pain levels.
Smiling has very positive social benefits as well. It directly boosts self confidence whether in a social or professional environment. Smiling gives you the appearance of approachability. With the increase in self confidence and approvability, it becomes easier to interact with others in a professional situations and at job interviews or client presentation. Smiling represents someone who is confidant, relaxed and easily able to work in a stressful situation.
One couldn’t think that we need research to tell us the benefits of a beautiful smile when we remember that feeling we get inside when we see someone instinctively responding to your contagious smile. So the next time you’re at your trusted dentist, make sure to give him/her your best smile!
